Noise pollution is any undesired or irritating sound that has an adverse effect on the health and well-being of people and other species is referred to as noise pollution.

Causes & Effects

Why does it happen and why is it harmful?

  • Statistic shows that there are 60,000 commercial tankers and container ships are on the seas anytime. Meanwhile, the distance travelled by ship in the Canadian Arctic almost 3 times of the past 25 years.
  • Ship equipped with air guns fire each 10-12s for WEEKs or MONTHs with the sound travel more than 4000KM.
  • Seismic air gun is 6-7 orders of magnitude louder than the loudest ship sounds.

Solutions

What can we do?

Underwater Reference Station

Currently, there are 12 underwater reference stations in U.S. waters which track ocean noise levels. This effort leads to another two initiatives as well.

  1. Producing maps of where these animals are located and in what densities.
  2. Predicting levels of underwater noise from human activities.

Quieting Designs

The design of silent propeller is proposed to benefit both the marine lives and business.

Sound Proofing Designs

Design the building with sound proofing structure or materials if it is expected to encounter huge noise frequently.

Noise Cancelling Earphones

To add on the sound proofing building, noise cancelling earphones help blocking the noise to a higher extent.
